Crime Summaries  for December 27, 2009 - January 2, 2010

Notes: Last night I attended a CAC meeting at the Zone 2 mini-precinct. Lt. Cotter gave us an update on overall crime for the year 2009 as compared to 2008. As a whole, crime in Zone 2 was down 8% for 2009. However, overall crime for the City as a whole was down 12%. Other numbers for Zone 2 are as follows: Larceny from Auto down 18%; robbery down 17%; no change in number of burglaries from 2008 - total number was 880; auto theft down 12%.

There is a new security company which has opened at 2900 Peachtree Rd (in the Peach Shopping Center) called "Accion Security Consulting". Among the many services being offered, they also sell home security products (cameras, alarms, lights & pepper spray). The business was started by Maj. Sellars (now retired from APD, Zone 2). Mention their Community Special for 20% off your first service or product.

The white BMW SUV involved in may break-ins in our area was found abandoned. It was a stolen vehicle. There have been many sightings of a suspicious vehicle over the past couple of days. It is described as a 4oor Camry 975ZLK gold or champagne color. This vehicle has been seen moving slowly through the neighborhood on at least a couple of occasions in the past two days and has been observed in driveways where it does not belong with multiple occupants in the vehicle.

Men are taking ladders out of tool sheds on the premises and getting into homes through second floor windows and/or attics which are often not alarmed.   Even with people in adjacent homes and with the alarms going off, they do not leave until the police come which can be another 20 or so minutes.  They have seen the men but have not been able to catch them.  Their neighborhood association suggested NO visible ladders on property; if they cannot be locked up, then chain lock them to something very sturdy.

A Pace Academy employee was accosted yesterday morning by a man demanding money just outside of the Starbucks on W. Paces Ferry Rd.  The Pace employee threw her coffee on the man, punched him in the stomach, and ran back into the Starbucks, shouting "call 9-1-1."  Fortunately, she was unharmed.

Although the police arrived within minutes, the assailant escaped in his car.  He was described as a white man, about 5'10" and 200 lbs., stocky build, wearing gray sweat clothes.

Please be aware of the precautions that our students and all of us need to take in the West Paces shopping area. Please feel free to share this with those in your community to increase awareness.

After a rash of stolen UPS packages before Christmas, one of our security officers talked with a security manager from UPS about the situation.  Here's what [he] learned from UPS:

This is a team of a woman and an 8 or 9 year old boy.  She drives around the neighborhood (don't know what kind of car yet) and the boy steals the packages.  To make it less obvious, he LEAVES a package in place of the one he takes.  Makes it look like he's just innocently correcting a mis-delivered package.
Please be on the lookout for this team of thieves.  If you see them, please call 911 immediately.

Officer Responded To An Audible Alarm To Find The Front Door Windows Broken Out And A Witness Who Stated That He Observed A White Dodge Minivan (tag 321 PZW) Exiting The Location.  Six Panasonic Flatscreen Televisions Were Taken.  Video Footage Shows Four Suspects With Ski Masks And Gloves Committing The Act.   Update - the police thanked the nearby residents who got up when they heard this alarm and were able to get the vehicle tag number. Thanks to that info, these guys were caught in Clayton County and several TV's were recovered. The police were able to positively identify three of these as having been stolen from Krust as the owner had recorded their serial numbers. The criminals were members of a well known Clayton County gang.

NEIGHBORHOOD ALERT


There have been reports about a black male that walks the CSX tracks by himself and screams and bellows to himself.  However, John Throckmorton at 1920 Ardmore Rd. told me he was in the Park with his family and the individual apparently now has become menacing to persons. John said that the man was throwing rocks at people from the tracks.  Thus there is a potential that someone could actually be injured if they are in the Park and the Track wanderer again starts throwing stones. I talked to Sgt. Barry Miller about the situation and he gave me the following advice:

Anyone going into the Park should always take their cell phone. If there is an incident with this person call 911 immediately and then the Neighborhood Patrol 404-224-3321. While calling move away quickly. Do not confront him.  Barry said that it is against the law just to walk on the tracks. So if you just observe him call the emergency numbers stated above. He doesn’t have to be throwing rocks to break the law.
 
If anyone detects that the individual walks the tracks at particular times, call the numbers above and convey this information to the Police.
