About Collier Hills (North)

The current neighborhood is characterized by charming single-story Cape Cod style cottages, built in 1939-1941 on quarter-acre plots. These houses are fairly similar in size and layout, ranging from 2-3 bedrooms and 1-2 baths. The appearance is close to the original, although most of the wood siding has been replaced with lower-maintenance materials. One street, a cul-de-sac originating at Bobby Jones' Golf Course, was developed in more modern style in the 1960's. In the past few years, some of the lots in the cul-de-sac have been cleared for new construction of larger homes suitable for larger families, and several houses have been expanded.

The area fronting Collier Road was developed separately. Although the architectural styles are from the same period, the houses tend to be larger and the styles more varied.

In general, the neighborhood is quiet, conservative, and friendly. A number of houses have been occupied by older singles or couples for long periods, giving stability to the area. Most of the rest are occupied, usually for a shorter time, by young single or married professionals, who tend to look for larger houses at some point (often when a second baby arrives). Families of four or more are the exception, except in the newer, larger houses on the cul-de-sac.

Prices for the "characteristic" houses currently run in the $500,000 range, although this can vary significantly by size, upgrades, location, and condition. The larger, newly constructed houses have been priced in the $800-900,000 range. (Of course, market conditions change constantly.)

Neighborhood public schools are E. Rivers Elementary School at the corner of Peachtree and Peachtree Battle Avenue, Sutton Middle School (4360 Powers Ferry Road), and North Atlanta High School, a double-magnet school (2875 Northside Drive, near West Wesley). Numerous private schools are convenient to the area. More Information on Schools.

Atlanta Memorial Park surrounds the neighborhood on three sides: Bobby Jones Golf Course to the north, a natural creek (Tanyard Creek, a tributary of Peachtree Creek) to the west, and Tanyard Creek Park to the south (across Collier Road). These provide a degree of quiet and a slightly rural feeling that is unusual for an inner-city neighborhood, and there is some wildlife in the area: raccoons, foxes, and even wild turkeys have been spotted. The natural areas are a major destination for migrating birds. A resident bluebird population has been established by a project on the edge of Bobby Jones.

The extensive parkland also provides nice areas for walking, and Tanyard Creek Park includes an enormous dog park and a playground. (In fact, it was rated "The Best Place to Take Your Pet" by Atlanta Magazine in 2000.) PATH is currently devloping a trail connecting Northside Drive to 28th Street along the western boundary of North Collier Hills.
